Theoretical & Experimental Probability

We started our day with math. We spent most of today’s lesson taking up yesterday’s homework on tree diagrams. We then worked on today’s strategy lesson where we calculated, tabulated, and compared theoretical and experimental probability. Students are asked to complete the practice problems on p. 421 of the MMS textbook. They are bringing home spinners to help them to do this work. The unit test for the Probability unit will now likely take place on Monday, June 6.  Some students will be writing a measurement retest tomorrow.

We met in our novel study groups to discuss chapter 8 of The Bridge to Terabithia. Students were assigned to read and respond to chapter 9 for homework.

We had an Arts’ Night Rehearsal after first lunch. Grade 6s used time between their tasks to work on their UOI project or novel study work or math. Arts’ Night presenters will be saying their lines by memory at tomorrow’s rehearsal.

Grade 6s attended French class with Mme. Villeneuve at the end of the day.

Spelling bee finalists, please keep practicing your spelling bee words and more for the contest against The Maples Academy.

Probability as a Percent

Yesterday we had Track & Field Day. Before we headed out we managed to squeeze in math and novel study.

In math we began a new unit on probability. We discussed the language of probability and how to write the probability of an event with a fraction. Students were assigned problems on pages 410 & 411 in the MMS textbook.

During novel study time, we only had enough time for novel discussions. Students were assigned to read and respond to chapter 6 for homework.

For Track & Field we started off with shot put and then the 100 m dash. We had lunch and headed outside for our remaining events when the thunderstorm began.

Grade 6s used the storm time to work on math, novel study, or their UOI project.

At the end of the day we headed back outside and managed to squeeze in 3 events: 800m, 200m, and the running long jump.

Today we began our day with math. We took up yesterday’s homework and then began a new lesson. We wrote probabilities as fractions, percents, decimals, and words. The Grade 6s are finding the work easy as we covered much of this in the fractions, percents, and decimals unit. Students are to complete practice problems on p. 414 – 415 of the MMS textbook for homework.

We had our sixth novel study discussion groups for Bridge to Terabithia. I will be sitting with a different group each day. Students will be assessed based on their participation and responses to the group discussions. Some students received class time to read and respond to chapter 7. Students who did not complete this work in class are asked to finish it up for homework. Students will be participating in a group discussion on Monday before being assigned the next chapter to read

Students then worked on their UOI projects.

After recess students had their second attempt at writing a tale or legend. They used the class-created checklist and feedback from their first attempt to write an improved piece of writing. Students who were at Track & Field will do this on Monday.

Spelling bee finalists, please keep practicing your spelling bee words and more for the contest against The Maples Academy.

Students had French class with Mme. Villeneuve.

Look out for DRA graphs coming home today.

Arts’ Night presenters should be memorising their lines.

UOI Projects

We started our day with an Arts’ Night Rehearsal. The Grade 6 class is doing a great job of helping run this event. Students worked on their novel studies homework in between performing their tasks.

The class then wrote their math unit test on perimeter, area, and volume.

I conferenced with students about their tale/fable/legend writing. Students have heard what their areas of strength and areas of weakness are in order to make improvements in their next writing attempt. Their ideas have been compiled into a class checklist on how to write a phenomenal fable or legend.  This checklist will be available for them to reference as they write their next fable.

I met individually with students to discuss their UOI projects. Students will be deciding on an issue and project type. They also need to decide on whether they will be working alone or in a group and which grade they would like to present their project to. Students/groups are responsible for speaking to teachers to ask for permission for this project and to arrange a suitable time to present the project.

We had our fourth novel study discussion groups for Bridge to Terabithia. I will be sitting with a different group each day. Students will be assessed based on their participation and responses to the group discussions. Some students received class time to read and respond to chapter 5. Students who did not complete this work in class are asked to finish it up for homework. Students will be participating in a group discussion tomorrow before being assigned the next chapter to read.

Most Grade 6s attended Gym class with Mr. Slyk.

We ended the day with students water ballooning the teachers! The Grade 6s class took too much pleasure in doing this. ;-)

Risky Situations

We began our day by working on math. We took up yesterday’s homework on the surface area of triangular prisms. We took time to carefully go over a number of questions. Thank you to students who did all the homework yesterday. I know it was a lot of work. Today’s lesson was about sketching polygons. For questions that ask to sketch all possible polygons with certain dimensions, students are encouraged to use a table and work in an organised and systematic way. Students are bringing home grid paper to complete today’s homework.  Students are asked to complete practice work on p. 371 and 372 of the MMS textbook for homework. Grade 6s will be writing a unit test on Wednesday, May 25.

We had our last lesson on working on gaining a better understanding of how to write a good narrative in the form of a fable or legend. The class read more samples of student writing in pairs. They discussed the strengths of each writing piece and the areas the student needs to improve on. They added their ideas in groups of four to chart paper. These ideas will be used to create a checklist to help Grade 6 students write a great narrative as their final writing piece this term. Students will be writing their final assessment piece next week.

We had our first novel study discussion groups for Bridge to Terabithia. I will be sitting with a different group each day. Students will be assessed based on their participation and responses to the group discussions. Students received class time to read and respond to chapter 2. Students who did not complete this work in class are asked to finish it up for homework. Students will be participating in a group discussion tomorrow before being assigned the next chapter to read.

Spelling Bee

We began our day by working on math. We took up yesterday’s homework on the volume of triangular prisms. We took time to carefully go over questions 4, 7, and 9 as those were the questions students had most trouble with. Students are encouraged to attempt these problems again to ensure they understand how to do them. Today’s lesson was about surface area of triangular prisms. We used what we learned about calculating surface area of rectangular prisms in term 2 to help us understand how to find the surface area of triangular prisms. Students are asked to complete practice work on p. 367 to 369 of the MMS textbook. For questions 1, 2, and 4, students need to only do parts a), c), and e) if applicable. Students can expect to use 1 whole page to show their work per problem. Grade 6s will be writing a unit test on Wednesday, May 25.

We then attended the spelling bee. Well done to all students representing our class. You all did well. Congratulations to Rachel, Adam, and Rohan for taking first, second, and third place respectively. These three students will represent our school against The Maples Academy on Monday, June 6.

We continued working on gaining a better understanding of how to write a good narrative in the form of a fable or legend. The class read more samples of student writing in pairs. They discussed the strengths of each writing piece and the areas the student needs to improve on. They added their ideas in groups of four to chart paper. These ideas will be used to create a checklist to help Grade 6 students write a great narrative as their final writing piece this term. Today students learned that a fable should teach a moral or a lesson.

Grade 6s attended Gym class with Mr. Slyk and French class with Mme. Villeneuve.

Spelling bee finalists, please keep practicing your spelling bee words and more for the contest against The Maples Academy.

Look out for after-care letters about the month of June coming home today.

Safety Online

We began our day by working on math. We took up Friday’s homework on the area of triangles and rectangles. We reviewed the difference between linear dimensions, area, and volume as well as the units we use to measure them. We then recalled how to calculate the volume of a rectangular prism (Vol = Base Area X Height). We did this in term 2.  We used the same formula to calculate the volume of a triangular prism. Students first found the area of the triangle (Base Area) and then used it to find Volume (= Base Area X Height).  Most students made excellent progress on the practice work on p. 364 & 365 of the MMS textbook. Any incomplete work must be completed for homework. Grade 6s will be writing a unit test on Wednesday, May 25.

We continued working on gaining a better understanding of how to write a good narrative in the form of a tale or legend. The class read more samples of student writing in pairs. They discussed the strengths of each writing piece and the areas the student needs to improve on. They added their ideas in groups of four to chart paper. These ideas will be used to create a checklist to help Grade 6 students write a great narrative as their final writing piece this term. Today students learned that a story that has a problem that needs to be resolved makes for a much more interesting read.

We began our last novel study for the year. We will be reading Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson as a class. Students received their copy of the book and their student workbook. Students received class time to read and respond to chapter 1. Students who did not complete this work in class are asked to finish it up for homework. Students will be participating in a group discussion before being assigned the next chapter to read.

Grade 6s attended Gym class with Mr. Slyk.

We ended the day working on our Who We Are UOI. Students learned that for their final project they will be will be teaching other students about healthy development or positive interactions or personal safety through a medium of their choice, e.g. presentation, skit, or activity. In today’s class students watched  “Amy’s Choice” – a true story about a 15- year old girl who ran away to meet a man she met online. They answered questions about how Amy was at risk and how they can avoid similar situations by communicating with trusted adults. Parents, please talk to your child about this lesson. Ask them to tell you what Amy did and what she should have done. Ask your child what they learned about keeping safe. Please also review your family’s expectations for internet safety with your child.

Spelling bee finalists, please keep practicing your spelling bee words and more for tomorrow’s spelling contest. Finalists must be in full uniform tomorrow.

Look out for Summer Fiesta letters coming home today.

Digital Portfolios

We began our day by working on math. We took up yesterday’s homework on the area of triangles and the relationship between the area of triangles and parallelograms. We then examined the relationship between the area of rectangles and triangles. Students discovered how the formula for triangles as Area = (b X h) ÷ 2 relates to rectangles. Students were again reminded that the height line should be drawn inside the triangle so that it extends at a right angle from the base to an opposite vertex, or it may be one of the triangle sides that is at a right angle to the base.  The class had much time to work on practice problems on p. 356 & 357 of the MMS textbook.

The Grade 10 students were presenting their personal projects today. We attended two presentation sessions to support the Grade 10s, to learn about the issues the Grade 10s worked on, and to help the Grade 6s understand what will be expected of them when they are in Grade 10. Students could choose from two of four issues to listen to and ask questions about.

In between personal projects, Grade 6s worked on their math practice work, their Exhibition video journal, and their digital portfolios. Students received the rubrics and checklists that were used to grade the exhibition work. They selected items form the exhibition that was their best work, something they worked their hardest on, something they need to improve on, and a way they showed a learner profile to add to their digital portfolio for this unit. I am still waiting on a group to send me their PowerPoint. Please send it ASAP in order for grades and portfolios to be finalised.

Spelling bee finalists, please keep practicing your spelling bee words and more for next week’s spelling contest.

At the end of the day we worked on better understanding how to write a good narrative in the form of a tale or legend. The class read samples of student writing in pairs. They discussed the strengths of each writing piece and the areas the student needs to improve on. They added their ideas in groups of four to chart paper. These ideas will be used to create a checklist to help Grade 6 students write a great narrative as their final writing piece this term.

Look out for June hot-lunch orders coming home today.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Areas of Parallelograms and Triangles

We began our day by working on math. We took up yesterday’s homework on the area of parallelograms. We then began learning about the areas of triangles. To help students understand the formula for the area of a triangle, they used two congruent triangles to create a parallelogram. Then they found the area of the parallelogram using the formula A = b X h. Students were asked to mentally find the area of one of the triangles. Students quickly realised that the area of one of the triangles was half of the area of the parallelogram.  This realization helped them to formulate the area of a triangle as Area = (b X h) ÷ 2. Students were reminded that the height line may be drawn inside the triangle so that it extends at a right angle from the base to an opposite vertex, or it may be one of the triangle sides that is at a right angle to the base.  The class had some time to work on practice problems. They are asked to complete problems on p. 360 & 361 of the MMS textbook.
We used the rest of class time to work on this terms writing assessment. The text form for this term is a narrative. Students wrote a fable or legend that explained how an animal got special or unique features. We examined the rubric as a class to ensure that everyone understood the criteria for this task. Many students used second recess & cafeteria time to complete this task.
Students who finished this task prepared their part of a class video for next year’s Grade 6s. The class decided that instead of writing letters of advice about Exhibition to the Grade 6s of 2016/2017, they would like to produce a video instead.
Students who finished their video worked on their math practice work.
Grade 6s attended Gym and French class today.
Spelling bee finalists, please keep practicing your spelling bee words and more for next week’s spelling contest.
I am still waiting on a couple of students to send me their PowerPoint. Please send them ASAP as we would like to work on digital portfolios tomorrow.
Some students are coming home with uniform violation forms. Please look out for these today.
We have begun uniform checks again! These will happen every now and again to ensure that all SJA students are wearing proper uniform. Uniform pieces must be bought through Alpa and Multiform Canada. Uniform violations will be sent home if a student is not wearing the proper piece of clothing! First violation: a warning to parents. Second violation: the office will notify a parent and the correct uniform piece must be brought to the school the same day.  Third violation: uniform piece will be sent home at parent’s expense. Fourth violation: community service hours will be assigned. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
Bring devices for tomorrow as we will be working on digital portfolios.

Areas of Parallelograms

We began our day by working on math. Students explored the areas of parallelograms with Mr. Little. They discovered that areas of rectangles are equal to areas of parallelograms where the length of the rectangle is equal to the base of the parallelogram and the width of the rectangle is equal to the height of the parallelogram. This comparison helped students understand that the formula for the area of a parallelogram is base X height. The class is asked to complete the practice work on p. 353 & 354 of the MMS textbook.

Mr. Little then introduced the class to our final unit of inquiry:

Who We Are An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.

Central Idea Being informed and practicing appropriate responses may help prepare us to deal with tricky situations.

Lines of Inquiry:

  • Factors that contribute to healthy development
  • Personal and inter-personal skills that promote positive interaction
  • Personal safety
Mr. Little presented students with social situations. As a group they were to identify the problem and a possible solution to the problem. Students shared their thoughts with the class. They then used chart paper to write about situations where their health, relationships and safety have been at risk. They also shared solutions to this situations.
After lunch and recess we were treated to delicious ice-cream. We then headed back to class for our in-class spelling contest. Congratulations to the whole class on their spelling skills and to Bhoovi, Calvin, Rohan, Rachel, and Adam for making it through this round. They will be representing the class at next week’s spelling bee in the auditorium. Finalists, please keep practicing your spelling bee words for next week’s spelling contest.
We then headed to our final squash lesson. We all had a blast and are sorry our squash time is over.
Students who made a PowerPoint presentation for Exhibition are asked to give me a copy of their Power Point by tomorrow. Email or USB is fine.
