Where We in Place and Time

Day 8

We began our day with math. Students continued working through their review packages and are asked to complete questions 6 - 10 by tomorrow. The Measurement unit test will be written on Thursday, February 2nd.

During inquiry time we began work on our new unit – Explorers. Students learned about the transdisciplinary theme, central idea, lines of inquiry, key concepts, and summative task for this unit.

Where we are in time and place: An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.

Central Idea: Exploration has changed and will continue to change people’s lives.

Key Concepts: Causation, Change

Lines of Inquiry:

·         First Peoples and their interaction with the environment (Causation)

·         Early explorers (Causation)

·         The interaction between First Peoples and early explorers (Change)

Summative Task: Students choose an explorer that they would like to research and create an RSA Animate about the explorer addresses the central idea, lines of inquiry, and key concepts for this unit.

Students began sharing what they already know and sometimes what they don’t’ know about Canada’s First Peoples in a preassessment activity.

At the end of the day, we had very little time due to an assembly and house games, we worked on our IB portfolios for the Flight unit. Students who did not get done in class are asked to complete this work at home and return it to school tomorrow.

Congratulations to Avneet and Bibi for being recognised as Risk-Takers for the month of January.

Students attended music, gym, and French class today.

A few students have not yet returned their City of Ember books. Please do this as soon as possible.

Reregistration

 After School Dismal Procedure

Good afternoon SJA Parents,

As we work to ensure the safest and most efficient system for student drop off, we would like to send out a few reminders to SJA parents.

  • Kiss and Ride runs every day from 3:30 - 3:40pm.  Parents choosing to not participate in the Kiss and Ride program are asked to wait until 3:40 to enter into the school building.
  • Parents wishing to sign their child(ren) out early may do so up until 3:20pm.  Parents may enter through the front door to sign out their child(ren).  Any parents entering through the front door before will be asked to wait at the front until their child can be called down via the PA system.  This will help to keep the hallways cleared for dismissal and for Kiss and Ride.
  • Parents entering through the front after 3:20 will have to wait until 3:40pm to enter the building.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep our afternoon dismissal as safe and efficient as possible.

Flight Reflections

Day 6

We began our day with math. We took up yesterday’s homework on relating units of mass. Students have received their review packages and are asked to complete questions 1 – 5 for Tuesday. The Measurement unit test will be written on Thursday, February 2nd.

During Flight inquiry time, students reflected back on the flight unit. They described their favourite part of the unit, how they demonstrated the attribute of being an inquirer. In addition they described an attitude and attribute they feel they have shown progress in during this unit. I continued to hear presentations on ‘our responsibilities with relation to flight’. All presentations are now complete.

We did not get to work on portfolios as we had planned to do. We will do this on Tuesday instead.  Be sure to bring your portfolio to school if you haven’t already returned it.

Students worked on speeches today. I checked that speech letters have been signed and Reasons and Examples Charts completed. Students who did not get their letters signed need to have this done before class. We continued working on the prewriting part of the writing process. Students tested the quality of their reasons and chose the three best reasons to add to their Topic and Reasons Organizer. Students shared their reasons with a partner to get another perspective on whether they had indeed chosen the strongest reasons. Students that did not complete the Topic and Reasons Organizer chart in class need to complete it for homework.  Once this was completed, students began researching information for their essay. Students are asked to continue their research over the weekend and add information to their Persuasive Essay Organizer. The research and organizer are all due on Wednesday, February 1st. Students will receive class time on Tuesday and Wednesday for this work.  Students will need devices for their speech research work.

Students attended music, gym, and French class today.

We are going on our trip to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum on Monday – Yay! Students should come to school in full uniform with a packed lunch.

A few students have not yet returned their City of Ember books. Please do this as soon as possible.

Look out for a French trip form coming home today.

Air Show

Day 5

We began our day with math. We took up Wednesday’s homework on capacity and volume. We then did a new lesson on relating units of mass. Ask your child to explain the difference between mass and weight as well as the relationship between milligrams, g, kg, and tonnes. Students are asked to complete practice problems on p. 240 - 241 of the MMS textbook. The Measurement unit test will be written on Thursday, February 2nd.

During today’s Inquiry into Flight time, we had our Air Show. Students chose the paper air plane that performed the best in their testing to participate in the Air Show. After a few practice runs, groups hurled their planes as best they could. Students had three chances at winning during the competition. They winners were decided by scoring according to placement during these three chances. Well done to Alffino and Sofia on their first place, Sai, Eghosa, and Satvik on taking second place, and Kaaya and Areej on winning third place for the paper air planes that traveled the furthest.

Students reflected on how their plane had performed compared to other planes, and on how well they had completed their flight report, before handing in their flight reports for marking.

At the end of the day we worked on speeches. I checked that speech letters have been signed and speech topics chosen. Students who did not get their letters signed need to have this done before class tomorrow. We continued working on the prewriting part of the writing process. Students decided where they stood on their chosen issue – for or against and recorded this information. Next they began thinking of reasons to support their opinion and examples to support their reasons. They were challenged to come up with five reasons and 3 examples for each reason. They recorded their ideas in their Reasons and Examples Chart. They used their devices to help them find supporting facts for their reasons. Any work that was not completed in class for this chart needs to be completed for homework. Students will need devices for their speech research work tomorrow.

While students worked on their speeches I started to hear presentations on ‘our responsibilities with relation to flight’. Students presented these last Monday when I was away. Presentations have to be repeated in order for me to assess students’ work. Those who did not have materials at school today, such as devices and cure cards, are asked to bring them to school tomorrow when they will present their work. We will be working on portfolios tomorrow too. Be sure to bring your portfolio to school if you haven’t already returned it.

Students attended gym and French class today.

A few students have not yet returned their City of Ember books. Please do this as soon as possible.
