Day 6 – Whole-Class Speech Rehearsal

Remember to return your reregistration packages to secure your spot for the 2018/2019 school year.

We began our day with speeches. It took most of the day to get through them all and give feedback to everyone on ways to improve the presentation of the speech. Well done to everyone for their hard work in writing the speech, their bravery in presenting to an audience, the respectful way in which they sat still and listened for so long, and the great feedback they gave to peers. Everyone should continue working on memorising their speech and improving their presentation. We will have the in-class presentation on Monday, where the 3 finalists will be chosen.

We did not have time for math today. As a result, we are moving the math test to Tuesday, February 7th.

During today’s inquiry time, students worked on their final project for this unit. Today’s goal was to write a narration for their RSA Animate. Some students had to do some trouble shooting to speed up their video even more to get it to be 5 minutes or less in duration. Students will work on recording the narration tomorrow.

Students attended French and gym class today.

Thank you for sending in items for the bake sale.

Remember to return the trip form for our visit to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Forms and payment are due on Monday, February 5th.

Keep collecting pledges and donations for the Jump Rope for Heart Event.

Day 5 – Recording the RSA Animate

Remember to return your reregistration packages to secure your spot for the 2018/2019 school year.

We began our day with our fractions, decimals, ratios, and rates unit. Today we learned that rates are a type of ratio that compares two items that have different units. To help students understand this they found their pulse, and counted the number of beats their hearts make in a minute. They expressed this as a rate – a heart rate – in beats/min. For fun we explored what burpees and relaxing do to our heart rates. Students then worked on their practice problems. Students who did not complete the practice work in class are asked to complete p. 130 – 131 of the MMS 6 practice book for homework. I have now checked all pages of the practice book. Students are asked to correct and/or correct these pages too. Students will be writing a mid-unit test on Friday, February 2nd.

Next we worked on speeches. Today’s goal was to practice reciting the speech to different partners and receive feedback on ways to improve the presentation of the speech. Students need to focus on memorising the speech. We will continue practicing daily with partners and will have a whole-class rehearsal tomorrow morning. Everyone is asked to have the speech memorised by the end of day today.

During today’s inquiry time, students worked their final project for this unit. Today’s goal was to record their RSA Animate. Students used their practice run, 10 step facts, doodles, paper, and markers to complete this task while the cameraperson recorded. Students who completed this portion attempted speeding up their videos 5 times. Devices are needed for the rest of this week as students work on this. Students will work on the narration tomorrow.

Students attended French, music, and gym class today.

Day 4 – The RSA Animate Rehearsal

Remember to return your reregistration packages to secure your spot for the 2018/2019 school year.

We began our day with our fractions, decimals, ratios, and rates unit. Today we learned that ratios compare two quantities of the same unit. We wrote part-to-part ratios and part-to-whole ratios. We also learned that we can use multiples and tables to generate an infinite number of equivalent ratios.  Students who did not complete the practice work in class are asked to complete p. 126 – 129 of the MMS 6 practice book for homework. I have now checked pages 118 – 123 of the practice book. Students are asked to correct and/or correct these pages too.

Next we worked on speeches. Today’s goal was to practice reciting the speech to different partners and receive feedback on ways to improve the presentation of the speech. Students need to focus on memorising the speech. We will continue practicing daily with partners and will have a whole-class rehearsal on Wednesday morning. Everyone is asked to have the speech memorised by the end of day Tuesday. Students who are behind on their speech work did not go to first recess today.

During today’s inquiry time, students worked their final project for this unit. Today’s goal was to rehearse their RSA Animate. Students used their 10 step facts, doodles, paper, and markers to plan out the RSA and then have a practice run with the illustrator drawing and writing while the cameraperson recorded. Students should practice speeding up the videos tonight. We record the final video in class tomorrow. Everyone needs their cameras at school for this. For the rest of this week. Students are bringing their explorers unit tests home today. Please review, sign, and return the tests.

Students attended French and gym class today.

Our class is responsible for hosting the bake sale tomorrow and on Wednesday. Please support our fundraising efforts for this event by sending in items to sell at the bake sale. All items must be peanut and nut free.

Day 3 – Planning the RSA Animate

We began our day with our fractions unit. Today we learned how to estimate and find percents. We worked through word problems and discussed strategies for solving them by first reading the problem carefully, recording what we KNOW, and recording what we need to FIND. We practiced the steps to estimating and finding percents as a class until everyone was confident that they could do this independently. Students who did not complete the practice work in class are asked to complete p. 124 – 125 of the MMS 6 practice book for homework. I have now checked pages 110 – 117 of the practice book. Students are asked to correct and/or correct these pages too. Remember to return math unit tests if you haven’t already done so.

Next we worked on speeches. Today’s goal was to have all paragraphs peer- and parent-edited for spelling, punctuation, capitalisation, and grammar. Speeches now need to be rewritten as a good copy for Monday, January 29th. Students are also to record their speech on cue cards for memorisation purposes. Both the cue cards and good copies are due on Monday. Students who are behind on their speech work did not go to gym today.

During today’s inquiry time, students worked their final project for this unit. Today’s goal was to plan their RSA Animate. They did this by drawing 10 facts they would like to teach the class on 10 steps. They then drew a doodle for each fact. Cameras, preferably on iPads, iPods, or iPhones will be needed next week Tuesday onwards for this project.

Students attended French, music, and gym class today.
