Day 6 – Painting Hot Air Balloons

We began our day with math. Students calculated percents of a number by multiplying. Students ignored the decimal initially but then placed it in the final answer. Students who did not complete this work in class are asked to complete pages 168 – 169 of the MMS 7 practice book for homework. Students will be writing a unit test on fractions and percents on Tuesday, March 6th.

Students were introduced to their summative task for the flight unit to build and test the best paper plane plane using the scientific method. Our operational definition of ‘Best paper plane’ is ‘the one that flies the farthest’.  Students have placed themselves in groups. They should visit the website below to choose the model of paper plane they will be testing in their investigation.

Students painted their hot air balloon models today. They focused on an authentic design that used colour and variety as their element and principle of design. This was a fun but messy project.

At the end of the day, students worked on their safety in flight presentations. These will be presented in class tomorrow. Devices will be needed for this task.

Students attended gym and French class today.

Day 4 – The Four Forces of Flight

Today’s math concept was trickier than usual. Students estimated to find the percent of an amount. We did this in two ways. First, students rounded and converted the percent to a fraction then multiplied the fraction by the amount. In the second method, students converted the percent to a decimal and then multiplied the decimal by the amount. Students who did not complete this work in class are asked to complete pages 165 – 167 of the MMS 7 practice book for homework. Students will be writing a unit test on fractions and percents on Tuesday, March 6th.

During our Flight inquiry time, students watched a couple of videos that described the four forces of flight. They took notes as they watched these videos.

After this, students participated in reading activity about the forces of flight. Students who did not complete this in class are asked to complete the task as homework.

Finally, at the end of the day we began addressing our final line of inquiry and key concept for this unit. Students are researching a topic that is related to our responsibility with respect to flying devices, safety, society, and the environment. Students used today’s class time compose questions about their topics, research their topics, and record their information in an organizer. Devices are needed tomorrow.

Students have placed themselves in groups with topics as follows:

Day 5 – Glider Testing

Despite the rainy weather last Friday, the Grade 6s made the most of the opportunity to be out of the classroom and working on their skiing and snowboarding skills as well as enjoying time with friends. We were all pretty tired and soggy by the end of the day, but it was a fun time.

In math, students reviewed percents and decimals. Most students remember how to do this work. Students who did not complete this work in class are asked to complete pages 160 – 164 of the MMS 7 practice book for homework. Everyone is asked to complete and correct pages 70, 74 – 86 too as all these are now marked. Students will be writing a unit test on fractions and percents on Tuesday, March 6th.

During our Flight inquiry time, students wrote a test to demonstrate their understanding of how Bernoulli’s principle is used to produce flight.

Later on we worked on flight again. This time students used instructions to build a glider. They then tested the flyer to determine what propels the glider, what makes it move forward, slow down, and turn. They identified their independent variables (flaps straight, flaps up, flaps down, one flap up and other down, etc.). Students noted the effect the independent variables had on flight (dependent variable). They recorded their observations in their report.

Students attended gym, French, and music class today.

There is a bake sale taking place tomorrow.

We will be painting our hot air balloons on Wednesday. Art smocks (or old t-shirts are needed).

Day 2 – Lift-Off

The Cinderfella performance took place this morning and was very enjoyable. It was wonderful to see everyone in pink to show we stand against bullying.

In math, students learned that repeated addition involving fractions can be written as a multiplication statement. Students worked on practice work involving the multiplication of fractions and also review work for the unit on fractions. Students are asked to complete pages 85 – 86, and 95 - 96 of the MMS 7 practice book if they did not get done in class.

During our Flight inquiry time, students participated in a carousel activity where they practiced explaining Bernoulli’s Principle completely and accurately using a checklist of criteria to guide their explanation. They also took turns listening to someone else explain the principle. Once everyone was confident they did this once more and were assessed by a peer using a scoring sheet. Students will write a test on Monday, February 26th, where they will repeat this process independently on paper.

Later on we worked on flight again. This time students designed and built paper planes and tested them at three different stations for distance, accuracy, and tricks. This was something everyone enjoyed participating in.

Students attended gym class today.

Our skiing trip takes place tomorrow. Please note that the departure time for tomorrow is different than our first trip. The bus leaves at 8 am. Students are asked to be at school between 7: 30 am & 7:45 am. Students are asked to bring all the required gear such as snowpants, gloves, change of clothes, lunch, money, etc. We expect to be back at school for regular dismissal time.
