Day 2 – Beginning the Scientific Method

I forgot to hit ‘publish’ with yesterday’s blog – sorry about that. You will find yesterday’s blog at the end of today’s blog.

As usual, we began our day with math. Today we divided to find percents. This was challenging at the start of the class time, but became easier with more practice. Students who did not complete this work in class are asked to complete pages 173 – 178 of the MMS 7 practice book for homework. Students will be writing a unit test on fractions and percents on Tuesday, March 6th.

We continued with our safety in flight presentations today as well as a presentation on eclipses. These are all now complete.

At the end of the day we worked on the flight summative task. We reviewed what is meant by the control variables, the independent variable, and the dependent variable. Students heard how the problem/question and hypothesis statement must include the independent and dependent variables. Students then worked on their background research to gain a better understanding of what makes a paper plane fly further. This information gave them direction on how to compose their question and how to state a hypothesis.

Students attended gym and French class today.

Look out for an exciting letter coming home today announcing the St. Jude’s Soccer Club.

Look out for a note about a DP information session taking place on Thursday, March 8th.

Next week is Spirit Week. Students are asked to wear their PJs to school on Monday.

Day 1 – Flight Safety Presentations

We began our day with math. Students applied their knowledge and understanding of decimals and percents to drawing circle graphs to represent data. This involved a few steps. First the data was converted to a fraction and a decimal. The decimal was multiplied by 360° to find the size of the sector in the graph. Students used compasses and protractors to construct the circles and sectors within the circle graphs. They finally assigned the graph a title and labeled each sector (including the % it represented). Students who did not complete this work in class are asked to complete pages 170 – 172 of the MMS 7 practice book for homework. Students will be writing a unit test on fractions and percents on Tuesday, March 6th.

During our flight inquiry time, students began their safety in flight presentations. We did not get through all these presentations today. We will continue with them tomorrow. Devices will be needed for this task.

Tomorrow, students will be conducting research on what design makes the best paper planes (i.e. the ones that fly the farthest). Devices will be needed for this.

Students attended gym, music, and French class today.

Ms. Roe-Etter will be presenting an information session on the Diploma Programme (DP), next Thursday, March 8th and 7 pm.
